$400 checks exclusively to car owners as the governor’s high inflation remedy benefits those who don’t feel inflation at the pump and excludes those who do not own vehicles.

Governor Newsom,
A $400 check for all car owners? I do not currently own a car. My car was totaled in January 2020. Due to Covid, when I got the insurance check, dealerships were closed, we were expected to remain home. I learned how to use delivery services. Since February 2020, I have used Uber and Lyft rides to get to destinations. Yet, I will not get relief from gas cost inflation? I am paying the surcharge on these Uber and Lyft rides! Will you demand that I get a credit on these costs? I pay daily for wherever I go.

A High Inflation Remedy for Gas Powered Car Owners
Governor Newsom, you have already suffered the indignity of a recall election. You need this benefit check to create supporters. The announcement through the media sounded like you are blatantly pandering to gas powered car owners while rewarding electric car owners, too. Let me offer better options to aid Californian voters as you address the pain of inflation. Biden is getting a bad rap for what Trump set in motion.
Offer a car purchase incentive that allows gas powered car owners to purchase (or lease) a hybrid or electric vehicle. Develop a loan program for lower income car owners, so they could afford to purchase a new hybrid or electric vehicle. Design an effective car replacement program where car owners can replace their gas guzzling vehicles (the worse the gas mileage per gallon the higher the credit?). Support it by helping institutions offer great interest rates, even for the credit challenged. Roll out a monetary credit program! A program that matches half of the monthly payment for a hybrid or electric vehicle the first year and reduces over the next three years. Settle up through our income tax filings each year.

Dilute the pain of upgrading to the vehicles that are not fossil fuel powered. Address the pain at the pump in a powerful way. Help us reach our climate goals, too! The Tesla owners aren’t being hurt by the gas cost increases, why would you give them a $400 credit? Focus on Californians who need help in switching away from fossil fuel.
You have to get this right. Choose an Inclusive Inflationary Relief Check!
Not ready for a complex program or have the time to roll that out this year? There are only two ways to promote this $400 check to California voters without getting smeared by different groups. Select a benefit that can reach every Californian and relieve OUR inflationary pain. For example, every Californian will get a $400 relief check who is:
- Over the age of 18. This would include family members living with their parents, and
- Whose primary home is in California. (Let’s not give this to those who have second homes here.)
CAREFUL!
Do not give this to only car owners – it is the wrong message.
Do not eliminate the benefit for people earning over a certain income. They feel inflation, too. We must recognize the pain of ALL Californians.
Be Inclusive! Include Everyone for Inflationary Relief.
Everyone is suffering from inflation, be generously inclusive. It only makes sense if you give every person who is in the state, whether they drive or not monetary inflation relief. No matter whether they drive or someone they know drives them, we all feel the impact of the increase in the cost of gas. Uber riders have seen fuel surcharges and those add up, too! We all need that support of $400. If someone doesn’t drive, I bet someone they know drives for them. They can willingly hand their inflation check to someone who helps them as appreciation. You can easily address how it is paid back through the income tax. Obviously, to All Californians is my preferred option.
Option 2 With Exclusions. Keep the Budget Down.
If you are hell bent on excluding everyone but “car owners”, I will urge my Representative and Senator to support an outline of necessary additional EXCLUSIONS. These exclusions should be applied to save Californians the cost of this very exclusive and special favor to car owners. I consider myself moderate politically. I do not want to give generous special favors for special interests unless it results in benefits for all Californians. I insist on exclusions if only car owners will receive the $400 benefit. These exclusions would extend to and include:
- All electric vehicle owners (they aren’t buying gas),
- Any Californians who make over $125,000. (They likely already own an electrical vehicle and benefited from previous tax incentives. They should or have solar panels on their roofs reducing the impact of all the energy related increases of the last couple of years),
- All adults who live in Long Term Care facilities or who are housebound. (If they own a car but don’t drive, their kids will be getting the benefit, no one should get two checks.)
- All teenagers (Their parents may be getting up to $800 already. They can convince their parents to share).
- Limit the $400 credit to one per household. (Why should some families who have multiple cars get multiple credits?).
- Limit the $400 benefit to one credit per residential address, exclude PO Boxes.
- Anyone taking the deduction for the heavy vehicles (over 6,000 lbs.). (These are business owners and already get deductions on their vehicles).
- Businesses should be excluded, only residential vehicles. (For the people, not business owners, they already get deductions).
All Californians should benefit from the Governors High Inflation Remedy.
All Californians should enjoy the benefit you are extending. Or in this case you are rewarding those Californians who have not upgraded to electric vehicles. You are rewarding car owners at the expense of those who use other means of transportation. You are excluding those who have chosen to use public transportation. You exclude those who voluntarily have reduced their fossil fuel use. Personally, I like the idea of incentivizing gas-powered car owners to change. They can receive a similar benefit as you have given homeowners adding solar panels.
Be the governor I want you to be. If you get this right, I plan on voting for you, again.
Consider me a Californian who cares about Californians and the Budget.
